The Future of Healthcare 2022 Infographic

The 2022 Future of Healthcare Report illustrates an industry with rising digital innovation expectations among patients, evolving healthcare delivery models, increasing competition on the healthcare delivery landscape, and payer organizations looking to advance digital transformation and drive both healthcare affordability and personalized care.

To capture these insights, HIMSS and its Trust Partners — Accenture, The Chartis Group and ZS — asked patients, clinicians, health system and payer organization leaders from around the world for their thoughts on their healthcare journeys moving forward.

Key insights from the 2022 report include:

Patients

  • 33% or more predict growth of condition-specific digital apps in the next three to five years
  • S. and U.K. patients are most likely to use retail clinics and online urgent care centers in the next three to five years than their German, Australian and New Zealand peers
  • More than 1/3 would consider using nanotechnologies

Clinicians

  • Only 13% see health organizations transforming into a fully digital work environment
  • 54% believe new financing models will reward personalized care
  • 52% believe personalized care will have a positive impact on clinician job satisfaction

Health System Leaders

  • More than one in two international leaders anticipate being in implementation stages for core clinical and enterprise digital initiatives in the next five years
  • About 40% of all U.S. and global respondents report high competition with large technology companies (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon)
  • 44% of U.S. providers expect to partner with competitors to deliver personalized care

Payers

  • 48% have improving care coordination as a primary goal for the future
  • 69% of U.S. payers plan to offer personalized wellness visits and health counseling in the next five years
  • Payers say big tech companies will likely drive innovation over the next five years
